Discovering Different Recovery Programs

smart vs aa

There are many different recovery programs out there. Alcoholics Anonymous and the twelve-step programs are certainly the most popular. They’ve been around for over 80 years, and have helped millions recover from addiction. However, these programs aren’t exactly the perfect fit for every struggling addict.

One program that is gaining in popularity is SMART Recovery. Unlike the twelve-step rooms and AA meetings, SMART Recovery does not stress the importance of a higher power. You find recovery in SMART meetings by self-reliance and learning new coping mechanisms. The meetings are led by trained professionals, not peers like twelve steps.

There’s a great post from Shifts Coaching called 7 Differences Between SMART Recovery and AA that we love. It compares SMART and twelve-step programs. You can learn about the differences between SMART and AA at https://shifts.coach/recovery/smart-recovery-vs-aa/.

There are also programs like Refuge Recovery. Refuge Recovery is a Buddhist-inspired path to recovery founded by Noah Levine just a few years ago. Although this program has had its issues from the start, it offers a powerful way to recover from addiction. Individuals are encouraged to recover via the path of mindfulness and compassion laid out by the Buddha over 2500 years ago. There’s no stress on a higher power, and the idea is that we all have what we need within us to recover from addiction.

Whatever recovery program you find, it’s important to keep in mind that your path is your path. One way to recover from addiction may not work for every single person. We may be pressured into following one path, or told that there’s only one way to recover. However, this is simply not fact. People recover in a variety of ways. You have to find the path to recovery from addiction that fits your needs and works for you.
